Sometimes, I wander back thinking about simpler times. The concept of simpler times of course, is a social construct. But still, it made life seem easier when you were younger, with fewer responsibilities and simpler goals in life. The reality is, your judgment was less clouded. The amount of information you process was less or at least, is supposed to have less weight when you are younger.
Today, for the first time on April 1st I find myself thinking of the Society of Spectacle, for me, the information overload, brand-driven world we live in. Just do a simple social media post mocking our own thinking process. For an obvious reason, April 1st is the one day of the year we spend a little more time than usual fact-checking information we see online that seems far-fetched, a little off, or a little too good to be true. But once April 1st is over, the world moves back to the fast-paced, informational overload world, where we simply read a title and share if it provides value, skim through articles to see if it validates our line of thinking, and get triggered of we get confronted, even if it is a joke.
Jokes themselves have become much different over the past 20 years. Certain jokes are no longer allowed. They are perceived as offensive, hurtful and even inhumane, even if the purpose had no intention to do so. Cancel culture is stronger and with less depth each day. Jokes aren’t what they used to be. Unless it is the joke of life. Of people getting triggered about something which has so little impact on life on earth. So much striving for justice in the world, a world where injustice keeps on growing, as we focus on injustice in one field of life, while unconsciously create injustice somewhere else.
In the end, we all want to enjoy our life. Never at the expense of others. And if someone has fun at your expense, either it is mutual, or it is time to move on. We’ve all lived the fool’s life. Most of us will be stuck in it forever. It is a lot more fun with a smile on your face.
So, if you been caught falling for an April fool’s joke today. Smile, you might have made someone’s day.
